Fall Writing Frenzy: Thanksgiving Pie

Thanksgiving and the biggest get-together of the year was tomorrow.
Everyone was bringing a dish to share.
Everyone but Claire.

Nobody asked Claire to bring anything.
But she wanted, she needed, she itched to make something.
To bake something.

It had to be a pie. Not apple or pecan or sweet potato, 
Those were yummy, but her favorite of all was pumpkin.
With cinnamon.

Claire didn’t know how to cook, but she figured she could learn.
The recipe wasn’t in the box, it was nowhere to be found.
Though she looked around.

Creating her own recipe couldn’t be too terribly tough:
A crust filled with puree and eggs and milk and then some pumpkin spice.
Should taste mighty nice.

Claire mixed, measured, and stirred until it was all silky orange.
The pie baked perfectly according to her plan.
It looked lovely in the pan.

The whole house smelled scrumptious. It made her positively pop with pride.
But Claire realized something as she snuck a bite to eat.
It wasn’t sweet.

The sugar had been forgotten, but there had to be a solution to save the pie.
She pondered and plotted out a super scheme:
Lots of whipped cream!

  1. I think I’ve been Claire a time or two lol But this was such a wonderful story. I loved how she wanted to do something so she made it happen. And while it didn’t go perfectly, she made the best of the entire situation. I thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Such a tender baking story! I’ve made many a pumpkin pie, and “silky orange” is a perfect description of uncooked pumpkin pie filling. It’s so creative how you use a smaller font size to indicate Claire’s interiority, and you convey her struggle to bake a pie so well, my heart aches for her. I love how she uses her ingenuity (an essential baker’s tool) to save the day! (In my experience, caramel sauce also works a treat.😋) Thanks for such a sweet, relatable foodie piece. @AnneLIpton
